Buybacks Are Not Enough. Revenue Is the Real Signal. Crypto projects have spent roughly $638M on token buybacks in 2026, up from $545M during the same period last year. But almost 90% of that spending came from just two protocols: $HYPE and $PUMP. That tells me the real story is not the buyback. It is the revenue behind it. $HYPE is the clearest example. Hyperliquid generated about $169M in revenue during Q2 and directed roughly $141M toward HYPE repurchases. Its model connects platform activity directly to token demand. That is very different from a project simply announcing a buyback to support sentiment. And this is where the market needs to become more selective. $JUP has also used protocol revenue for buybacks, yet its token has still struggled over the longer term. $LINK provides another example where buybacks have not automatically translated into sustained price appreciation. So the question should not be: “Does this token have a buyback?” It should be: “How much sustainable revenue is being converted into recurring token demand?” That distinction matters. If protocol revenue grows, buybacks can scale. If users leave and revenue falls, the buyback engine weakens at exactly the time investors need it most. My radar: $HYPE — the strongest current example of revenue-driven token demand. $PUMP — another major buyback model, but with very different underlying economics. $JUP — watching whether higher buyback allocation can translate into lasting value. $BNB — a mature example of ecosystem activity and token economics. $AAVE and $UNI — important tests for DeFi value capture. $ENA — watching how revenue-sharing mechanisms evolve. $CRV, $PENDLE and $LDO — smaller but important experiments in protocol economics. The bigger shift is happening beneath the headlines. Crypto is slowly moving from narrative-based valuation toward cash-flow-based valuation.
