"The Compound Interest of Life Vol.24|Katherine Johnson: She Calculated the Path to Space, but Her Name Was Delayed by Decades"
$SPCX On February 20, 1962, John Glenn was preparing to board Friendship 7. If the mission succeeded, he would become the first American astronaut to orbit the Earth. The orbital control equations had been input into an IBM electronic computer, and data was transmitted between computing facilities in Washington, Cape Canaveral, and Bermuda. The machine was much faster than humans and represented a new computational era for the U.S. space program. Glenn still made one request: please have Katherine Johnson recalculate the results. She sat at the desk, using a mechanical calculator to check the orbit from launch to splashdown. NASA later recorded that Glenn’s meaning was clear: if she said the numbers were reliable, he was ready to go. This story is often told as "man versus machine." The truth is more valuable. Johnson was not competing with the electronic computer in speed; she checked whether the equations, inputs, and results used by the program were consistent with each other. She used years of accumulated judgment to establish trust in a new system. That day, Glenn orbited the Earth three times and returned safely. The mission was recorded in U.S. space history, but the Black female mathematician responsible for verifying the numbers did not immediately become a publicly known name. Her compound interest was hidden in precision: breaking down complex problems into verifiable steps time and again, allowing others to entrust lives, budgets, and national plans to a set of numbers. Before fame: her talent appeared early, but the path did not follow Katherine Co

"The Past Has Been On-Chain" Vol.17|September 27, 2012: Bitcoin Has No Company, But a Foundation Was Established
$BTC On September 27, 2012, Gavin Andresen posted an announcement on the BitcoinTalk forum: The Bitcoin Foundation was officially established. At the time the post was published, Bitcoin had been running for just over three years. Satoshi Nakamoto had already faded out, and the software was mainly maintained by a group of developers scattered around the world. The network had no headquarters, no customer service, and no company that could represent it by signing, hiring, or responding to regulators. Freedom brought vitality but also left many tasks without accountability. Who would provide long-term funding for core developers? Who would maintain the test network and seed nodes? When the media associated Bitcoin with scams, money laundering, and the black market, who could provide clear responses? When businesses wanted to integrate Bitcoin but lacked security standards and operational norms, who could they turn to? That same month, the exchange platform Bitfloor was attacked, and about $250,000 worth of Bitcoin was stolen. Similar incidents continuously reinforced the negative impression of Bitcoin externally. Several early participants therefore decided to establish a real-world institution for this company-less protocol. The Foundation set three missions for itself: standardization, protection, and promotion of Bitcoin. Gavin looked to the Linux Foundation as a model. Linux is also maintained by global developers; the Foundation does not own the open-source code but can raise funds, hire key developers, hold conferences, and handle legal and business affairs for the ecosystem. The initial board members included Gavin Andresen, Pe

"The Compound Interest of Life Vol.23|John D. Rockefeller: Turning Every Drop of Oil into a System"
$XOM On May 15, 1911, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Standard Oil violated the Sherman Antitrust Act and ordered the breakup of this massive oil system. Seventy-two-year-old John D. Rockefeller had long since stepped away from daily operations but still held about a quarter of the parent company's shares. He had spent decades integrating refineries, railroad discounts, oil barrels, pipelines, warehouses, and sales networks into one system; now, the law demanded this system be separated. The ruling seemed like a defeat. Standard Oil was split into multiple independent companies, and Rockefeller lost control of the unified empire. Contrary to many expectations, he did not become poor because of this. Shareholders received shares of the split companies proportionally, and the automotive era continued to drive gasoline demand upward. Many subsidiaries later grew into industry giants like Exxon, Mobil, and Chevron. An antitrust ruling broke up the company but did not dismantle the accumulated technology, assets, brands, and distribution capabilities. Rockefeller's story is therefore difficult to write as a simple lesson in wealth. He demonstrated how systems can generate astonishing efficiency, but also showed that when efficiency combines with the power to exclude competition, society as a whole bears the cost. Before fame: His father wandered around, and his mother taught him to keep track of every penny. John Davison Rockefeller was born in 1839 in Richford, New York, on a farm

"The Past Has Been On-Chain" Vol.16|September 26, 2020: $281 million stolen, 84% surprisingly recovered
$BTC $ETH $USDT At 2:51 AM on September 26, 2020, KuCoin's risk control system triggered the first alert. An abnormal ETH transaction was transferring funds out from the exchange's hot wallet. Within minutes, more ETH and ERC-20 tokens flowed out through different addresses. At 3:01 AM, the system again indicated an abnormal hot wallet balance. At 3:15 AM, KuCoin formed an emergency response team; at 3:20 AM, the team shut down the wallet server, but the abnormal transfers on the blockchain did not stop. This detail quickly escalated the problem. The attacker had likely obtained the hot wallet's private keys; even with KuCoin shutting down internal servers, the attacker could still sign transactions from any connected device. At 4:20 AM, the team began moving assets that had not yet been transferred out into cold wallets. By 4:50 AM, most of the remaining funds had been moved. Around 5:00 AM, KuCoin contacted platforms including Binance, Huobi, OKEx, Bybit, and Upbit, requesting them to mark the attack addresses and block suspicious deposits. At 10:41 AM, KuCoin officially disclosed the incident; at 12:30 PM, CEO Johnny Lyu explained the timeline via livestream, promising that the affected users' funds would be covered by the exchange and insurance funds. All times above use KuCoin's announced UTC+8 timezone, which is the same as Taiwan time, so there is no cross-day conversion issue. The initial announcement did not disclose the total loss because the stolen asset package

"The Compound Interest of Life Vol.22|George Lucas: Turning a Movie into an Entire Galaxy"
In 1979, the production of "The Empire Strikes Back" was like a spaceship lost without navigation. George Lucas decided to finance the sequel himself to break free from the creative control of the film studios. He used the funds earned from "Star Wars" and also borrowed from banks. The budget kept rising, progress was continuously delayed, and the loan pressure fell on him and Lucasfilm. If the movie failed, he would lose a company, not just a director's fee. His father had warned him since childhood not to borrow money. Yet he still signed the papers. Lucas later recalled that at the time he had only about half the production funds and had to borrow the other half. Twentieth Century Fox was responsible for distribution but could not decide how the film was made. In May 1980, "The Empire Strikes Back" was released; initially, the reviews were not unanimously positive, but the box office ultimately saved his gamble. This bet changed his relationship with Hollywood. Directors usually receive payment and hand over the finished film to the studio; Lucas reinvested the cash from a successful film, the rights to sequels, and merchandise licensing into the next project and an entire production infrastructure. What he later truly sold far exceeded just a few films. Before fame: He almost became a race car driver and almost didn't get into film school. George Walton Lucas Jr. was born in 1944 in Modesto, California. His father ran a stationery and office supplies store and hoped his son would take over someday. Young Lucas had limited interest in classes and was more focused on

Yesterday, I spent a warm Mid-Autumn Festival with family and friends, watching the moon by the seaside and having a barbecue and chat at a friend's house. When I was young, I didn't understand that ordinary life is a blessing. As I grow older, I increasingly realize that the greatest happiness in life is having healthy parents, a healthy self, and a life you love! Today, I came across a blogger's tutorial video and asked my GPT (or any AI you usually use) the following questions. After repeatedly reading and reflecting, I truly saw a different side of myself! You should try it too. 1. Based on every conversation we've had, tell me five things you can see but I've never told you, and don't hold back just to make me feel better. 2. Tell me the patterns you see: how I think, how I make decisions, and one thing I've been denying. 3. Predict my next five years if I don't change anything, then predict again if I fix the pattern that's been holding me back. 4. Now, based on what you know about me, write a sentence I should read every morning.

"The Past Has Been On-Chain" Vol.15|September 25, 2023: Sold 400,000 shares, exchanged for 5,445 bitcoins
$BTC $xMSTR On September 25, 2023, MicroStrategy submitted a brief 8-K filing to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The document contained two nearly identical figures. The first figure was $147.3 million. Between August 1 and September 24, MicroStrategy purchased approximately 5,445 bitcoins, spending about $147.3 million in total, with an average price of $27,053 per bitcoin, fees included. The second figure was also $147.3 million. During the same period, the company issued and sold 403,362 Class A common shares in the open market, netting approximately $147.3 million after sales commissions. The filing did not specify that every dollar was designated for this batch of bitcoins, but the two amounts align almost perfectly. The company issued new shares to the market and then converted the proceeds into bitcoin. The dates also need to be distinguished clearly. The 5,445 bitcoins were not purchased all at once on September 25. The actual purchase period spanned from August 1 to September 24; September 25 was the date the company officially disclosed the transactions. SEC records show the filing was made public at 8:00:52 AM Eastern Time on that day, which converts to 8:00:52 PM Taiwan Time, still on September 25. After completing this purchase, MicroStrategy and its subsidiaries held approximately 158,245 bitcoins, with a cumulative purchase cost of about $4.68 billion.

"The Compound Interest of Life Vol.21|Muhammad Ali: The Most Expensive Victory Happened Outside the Ring"
On April 28, 1967, the U.S. military draft center in Houston called out the name Muhammad Ali. He did not step forward. When the staff called his name again, he still stood his ground. This action, without throwing a punch, caused the then 25-year-old, at the peak of his career, world heavyweight boxing champion to lose his title and boxing licenses in several states. Two months later, a federal jury found him guilty of draft evasion, sentencing him to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. He did not go to jail during the appeal but was unable to participate in official matches from March 1967 to October 1970. For a boxer who relies on speed, reflexes, and physical fitness, the ages from 25 to 28 are almost irretrievable. At that time, many American media outlets called him a coward, and some believed he was just using religion to avoid responsibility. Ali insisted that he applied for conscientious objector status based on his religious beliefs and opposed the Vietnam War. It was not until 1971 that the U.S. Supreme Court unanimously overturned the conviction. The legal victory did not restore the lost matches to him but changed the value of his name. A boxing champion can be defeated in a single match, but those willing to stake their prime on their principles enter a longer public memory. Before fame: a stolen bicycle and a child skilled at attracting attention Muhammad Ali was born in 1942 in Louisville, Kentucky, originally named Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr. His father painted signs and billboards, and his mother was from

"The Past Has Been On-Chain" Vol.14|September 24, 2021: China Closes the Door on Crypto Trading
$BTC $ETH $SOL On the afternoon of September 24, 2021, the price of Bitcoin suddenly plunged from around $45,000, dropping more than 9% at one point, reaching a low near $41,000. This time, the news triggering market volatility again came from China. The People's Bank of China publicly released on its official website the "Notice on Further Preventing and Handling Risks of Virtual Currency Trading Speculation." The document was jointly issued by ten departments including the central bank, the Cyberspace Administration of China, the Supreme People's Court, the Supreme People's Procuratorate, the Ministry of Public Security, the China Securities Regulatory Commission, and the State Administration of Foreign Exchange, covering almost the entire financial regulatory, internet management, and judicial enforcement systems. The date needs special distinction: the notice is dated September 15, 2021, but the actual public release date was September 24. China and Taiwan both belong to UTC+8, so there is no date difference caused by time zone. Therefore, this record refers to the policy disclosure date that triggered the market reaction on September 24. The notice first reiterates that virtual currencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Tether do not have legal tender status and cannot circulate as currency in the market. What truly shocked the industry was the significant expansion of the regulatory scope. Activities including fiat-to-virtual currency exchange, exchange between different virtual currencies, acting as a central counterparty for transactions, providing information intermediary and pricing services, token issuance financing, and virtual currency derivatives trading are all classified as illegal financial activities. In the past, some trading platforms moved their company registration and servers overseas after domestic exchanges were shut down in 2017, continuing to serve Chinese users through websites or apps. The new notice specifically
