Elon Musk says Tesla and SpaceX need their own chip manufacturing capacity if they want to keep scaling AI, robotics and autonomous cars.
His argument is simple: if chip supplies from Taiwan are disrupted, the consequences could be massive. And with existing fabs already running at full capacity, Musk says there are only two options:
“Either build Terafab or fail to scale.”
Tesla and SpaceX are already building an R&D chip fab in Austin, with the first useful chips potentially coming by the end of next year.
A $40B stake is evidence of how far an early bet can travel, not proof of the next valuation milestone. Vy Capital's projection that SpaceX could exceed $10T within 5-7 years sets a much higher bar.
My read: the key test is whether expansion into AI and orbital compute can generate earnings that justify the ambition. A long investment horizon helps, but does not settle that question.

INTERESTING: A VC firm with just four investment staff has built a $40 BILLION stake in SpaceX, per FT.
Vy Capital owns roughly 3.4%, making it the company’s fifth-largest shareholder, ahead of the disclosed holdings of Sequoia and Andreessen Horowitz.
It first invested in 2016 at a roughly $15 BILLION valuation.
The firm's assets under management jumped from $27 BILLION at year-end to $50 BILLION in June.

🚀 Starship Flight 14 is a big one.
SpaceX is targeting no earlier than Sept. 22 from Starbase in Texas.
Every Starship flight so far went to space and came right back down. This one is different. Flight 14 is the first attempt to actually put Starship into orbit.
Onboard: about 20 Starlink V3 satellites. These new satellites are huge — too big for Falcon 9 to launch in a useful way. If it works, they stay in space and can actually join the network.
The plan:
1. Launch
2. Reach orbit
3. Deploy the satellites
4. Bring the ship back down for a controlled splashdown in the Indian Ocean.
This is the flight people have been waiting for.


Starship Flight 14 is about to take Starlink deployment to another level
Starship will carry 26 Starlink V3 satellites to orbit
Each V3 satellite is designed to add around 1 Tbps of downlink capacity
That means:
• 26 satellites
• ~26 Tbps of new network capacity
• Around 10× the capacity added by a single Falcon 9 launch carrying V2 Mini satellites
After deployment, the satellites will unfold their antennas and solar arrays, establish RF and laser links with the Starlink network, raise their orbits, complete on-orbit checkouts.....and begin serving customers within weeks
And there’s another wild part
3 of the satellites have been modified with cameras specifically to scan Starship’s heat shield after deployment and send imagery back to SpaceX
So one Starship flight is not only massively expanding Starlink capacity.....
The satellites themselves will also be watching Starship in space and helping SpaceX prepare it for future returns to the launch site
