Altcoins Are Moving. But This Rally Has a Leverage Problem. $BTC is sitting around $80K. Meanwhile, $ETH is up more than 2%, $SOL is above $105, $BNB is gaining, and several altcoins are starting to outperform Bitcoin. At first glance, this looks like the beginning of a broader rotation. But derivatives data tells a more complicated story. Around $98M in crypto futures positions were liquidated over the last 24 hours, with $ETH accounting for roughly $14.5M and $SOL around $1.6M. More importantly, the latest move has been heavily influenced by short liquidations. For $BTC and $ETH, roughly 87% and 89% of recent liquidations respectively were shorts. That matters. A short squeeze can push prices higher without necessarily representing fresh long-term demand. And Bitcoin's open interest has fallen about 7.25% over two days, suggesting meaningful deleveraging rather than a clean expansion of bullish positioning. So I’m not chasing the green candles. I’m watching whether spot demand can take over after the leverage clears. My radar: $ETH needs to keep outperforming $BTC. $SOL needs to hold above $100. $BNB needs to maintain its relative strength. $XRP needs to participate without relying entirely on derivatives. Then I want to see whether liquidity spreads into $LINK, $AAVE, $UNI, $ARB, $APT and $SUI. $DOGE is also worth watching because its recent strength shows that risk appetite is reaching further down the market-cap curve. But there is one signal I would take seriously. If Bitcoin remains stable around $80K while altcoins continue gaining after open interest has already been reduced, that would be much healthier than a move driven purely by leverage. That would suggest genuine rotation. If instead leverage starts rebuilding aggressively while spot volume fails to confirm, the rally becomes vulnerable to another liquidation cascade.
