AI is turning into a credit market story.
According to the Financial Times, SpaceX is in talks to raise about $40B in debt to buy Nvidia AI chips. The reported package includes around $10B in bank loans and $30B in investment-grade debt, with Apollo expected to lead the financing. A deal could close in 2027, but talks are still early and may not result in a transaction.
Why the financing matters:
• SpaceX acquired xAI in February. xAI's Colossus infrastructure already runs on Nvidia GPUs. Scaling AI compute also requires power, cooling and facilities.
• In January, Apollo-managed funds led a separate $3.5B financing for Valor to purchase and lease data-center infrastructure, including Nvidia GB200 GPUs, to an xAI subsidiary. That deal is not part of the reported $40B plan.
• SpaceX priced a separate $25B bond offering in June, with proceeds intended primarily to repay a bridge loan.
• Nvidia announced plans with Apollo and other firms to establish AI compute financing platforms. Those plans are separate from the reported SpaceX deal, too.
For markets, the question is no longer just who can secure chips. It is who can finance the buildout, at what cost, and whether demand can generate returns to support it. GPUs and data-center capacity are increasingly being financed as infrastructure, not simply purchased as hardware.
For crypto markets, the connection is indirect, not a proven price signal. If funding remains available, AI investment could support broader risk appetite. If borrowing costs rise or returns disappoint, sentiment toward higher-risk assets could come under pressure. Neither outcome follows automatically from this report.
For traders, the next things to watch are the funding terms, the cost of debt and whether a deal is reached at all. What are you watching most: AI chip exposure, the financing behind the buildout, or crypto-native assets?
