Tokenized stocks need more than 24/7 trading.
OKXICE LLC, the joint venture between OKX and Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), parent company of the New York Stock Exchange, has notified the SEC of its plans for a tokenized stock trading venue. The proposed venue aims to support round-the-clock trading, initially covering more than 60 US-listed stocks.
The bigger idea is market structure, not just longer hours.
The SEC’s Innovation Exemption provides temporary, conditional relief for eligible venues to explore trading tokenized US stocks through automated market makers and liquidity pools. Here is what matters:
• Shareholder rights: Eligible tokenized stocks must give holders the same rights and privileges as the corresponding traditional shares, including applicable dividend and voting rights. They are distinct from products designed solely to track a stock’s price.
• A voice for issuers: Before a venue offers stock tokenized by an unaffiliated third party, it must give the issuer written notice and an opportunity to object.
• Permissioned access: Trading through these liquidity pools is restricted to eligible participants, even though the underlying blockchain is public and permissionless.
• Clear guardrails: The relief is not a blanket exemption from securities rules. The framework places limits on eligible stocks and trading volume, and requires venue smart contracts to be public and auditable.
For us, the opportunity is to bring OKX’s digital asset experience together with ICE’s market infrastructure expertise and explore how onchain technology can work alongside established shareholder rights and investor protections.
This is a proposed venue, not a product launch or an announcement of SEC approval for OKXICE. The final stock lineup, timing and availability remain subject to applicable requirements.
